God Acts

Nahum got the job Jonah wanted:  prophesy of destruction for the murderous, evil city of Nineveh.  It took place about 150 years later than Jonah would have done it.  Incredible power and prestige filled the city.  Sennacherib is said to have had a palace that encompassed five acres!  Check out this picture of one (of many) gates in this city.  Libraries and earthly treasures abounded...so did evil.  The book of Nahum is a reminder that God sees, God cares and God acts.  Intermingled with the declarations of impending doom, God reminds His people that they have a shelter in Him!

As we look around our world, we see great evil.  Corruption, greed, iron bands of addiction, hatred and idolatry sometimes seem unchecked.  God sees.  He cares about every life, and we are to be His soldiers.  He is Jehovah Nissi, the Lord our Banner.  We are to be soldiers marching under the victory of Jesus.  We are heading toward a triumphant celebration.  One of my favorite verses is nestled in this book.  Remember:  He is present.  He is concerned.  He is Victory!

The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
Nahum 1:3
