Exodus: Chapter 17

Yesterday, the Bread of Life, today, the Water of Life!  The intricate weave of scripture is a beauty to behold; the revelation of Christ so clear in the Old Testament.  The Through the Bible commentary I refer to points out that the rock of our salvation was stricken--just as Moses had to strike the rock to produce the water that sustained life.  It brings to mind the Isaiah 53 passage in which it says '...and we did esteem Him stricken, smitten of God and afflicted.  But He was wounded for our transgressions!'  Praise God for Christ's redemptive work and for shepherds who lovingly guide us through this journey of life.

Following that beautiful reminder of life flowing from Christ, we are brought to the first battle scene.  Life does have many battles, but Jesus has overcome!  The skills and weapons of the Israelites were untested in battle; yet Moses' was a faithful shepherd who kept his hands raised to God.  The battles are the Lord's, but sometimes we are in the trenches.  We so desperately need others who will pray for us and others who will support our prayer warriors.  There is a role for each of us to play; we must not let the world or our fallen natures or the evil one discourage us!
