Parents as Builders

Construction projects take a lot of planning. No one would jump into building a home with just the knowledge acquired from having lived in a house. Yet people become moms and dads because a baby is born. With the birth of a baby, a myth is born. That fable tells parents that parenting knowledge comes from having been a child and having had parents. The best of myths have a shred of truth. Certainly, babies grow without parents having a detailed construction plan for their life which has been placed in their care. Life building, though, is an art that involves knowledge, skill and faith. Parents can never have the complete blueprint of a child’s life. Every baby is a living soul designed by the Creator with life plan details only He knows. The Master Designer, though, gifts each of us the privilege and responsibility of impacting others lives. As parents, we establish, shape and decorate our children’s lives. A plan for that work is vital; a vision and goal for our work as parents—as life builders-- is simply wise planning.

Achieving goals is something that lends itself to planning! Vision is the first step in a goal. What is the desire you have for your parenting? Secondly, goals require us to be temperate in our efforts toward achieving them. We need to exercise self-restraint and moderate our actions toward an end goal. A mature, solid life is not created in a month. On the journey toward our parenting goal there will be some treacherous spots, some looming disasters and terrifying cliffs. Achieving our goal will require confident hope in the One who gave us our children; the One who designed us and them. The old adage that God does not call the equipped, He equips the called is perfect for parenting. He is worthy of our confidence. Finally goals are achieved through sacrifice and personal discipline. Our physical bodies are tools which must be submitted to our over-arching goal. Reaching parenting goals will require sleepless nights, lost career opportunities and other physical sacrifices. Plan a goal for your parenting and then live the plan.
